False Cognates

"Cognates" are words that look quite similar between two languages and have the same roots.  English and Spanish share many cognates that come originally from Latin, for instance.  However, there exist many "false cognates" - words that share the same root but have different meanings.

For example, "compromise" in English and "compromiso" in Spanish:

A "compromise" is essentially a negociation or a "deal," whereas "compromiso" is a committment - quite different meanings for words of the same root.
